Benefits Package
Free visa, free shared accommodation in company camps, free meals or food allowance (SAR 300-500), free transportation to job sites, free safety equipment and uniforms (insulated boots, safety glasses, arc-flash gear for HV work), medical insurance, paid annual leave, overtime pay, end-of-service gratuity, performance bonuses, and return flight tickets to the home country. Working Conditions
Electricians typically work 8-10 hour days, 6 days per week. Industrial sites operate in shifts (day/night) for maintenance work. Construction site electricians work primarily during daylight hours. Project-based work may require extended hours during commissioning phases. All electrical work follows Saudi Building Code (SBC) and Saudi Electrical Code standards. Safety protocols are strictly enforced, especially for high-voltage and live work.
Saudi Electrical Code (SBC) Knowledge
Working in Saudi Arabia requires familiarity with the Saudi Building Code (SBC) and Saudi Electrical Code. These follow IEC and partial NEC standards. Key areas include grounding requirements, conduit specifications, panel board configurations, and earthquake-resistant installations. Most employers provide orientation on SBC requirements after joining. Pre-arrival familiarity is a strong advantage.
Visa and Iqama Process
The employer handles visa processing through the Ministry of Human Resources. After selection (typically following trade tests), you receive a work visa. Upon arrival, Iqama is processed within 90 days. Many MEP contractors batch-process visas for bulk recruitment. For Aramco contractor positions, additional security clearance and site permits are required, adding 2-4 weeks to onboarding.
Eligibility and Required Skills
Candidates must have a valid ITI (Industrial Training Institute) certificate in electrical trade or equivalent diploma. Minimum 2 to 5 years of experience is required depending on the role. Knowledge of Saudi electrical codes (SBC) is an advantage. Candidates must be able to read electrical drawings, schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams. Physical fitness is required as the job involves climbing, lifting, and working in various environments. Color vision is important (for wire color identification).
Required Documents
Original ITI certificate or diploma in electrical, experience letters from previous employers covering at least 2 years, valid passport with 18+ months validity, recent passport-size photographs, medical fitness certificate (including color vision test), police clearance certificate, and any additional certifications like PLC programming, AutoCAD electrical, solar installation, instrumentation, or NEBOSH safety certifications.
How to Apply
Apply through registered manpower agencies that recruit for Khobar-based MEP contractors and facility management companies. Many large employers like Nesma, Saudi Binladin Group, and ALEC recruit through their HR portals (nesma.com/careers, sbg.com.sa/careers). Prepare for trade tests that assess practical electrical skills including wiring, panel work, fault diagnosis, and reading schematics.
Trade Test Preparation
Trade tests for electricians typically include: reading electrical drawings, wiring a junction box with specified circuits, identifying faults in a test panel, motor connections, panel termination work, and verbal Q&A on electrical theory. Practice common scenarios: 3-phase wiring, motor starters (DOL, star-delta), MCB selection, earthing systems, and basic troubleshooting. Bring your own basic hand tools where requested.
Career Growth in Electrical Trade
Career progression includes: junior electrician → senior electrician → chargehand → foreman → supervisor → site engineer → project engineer → project manager. Specialized paths include PLC programming, automation, building management systems (BMS), instrumentation, and solar energy. Many experienced electricians transition to electrical inspectors, QA/QC roles, or training instructors.
Avoiding Recruitment Fraud
Electrical trade jobs are widely targeted by fraudulent agents. Real recruitment charges nominal fees (SAR 10,000-20,000 for entire process). Never pay SAR 50,000+ to anyone. Verify the employer’s existence through Saudi Chamber of Commerce. Demand written contracts with exact salary, job position, location, accommodation type, and contract duration.
