Working Conditions
Oil field work is demanding with 10-12 hour shifts common. Many positions follow rotation schedules: 28 days on, 28 days off (for offshore), or 6 days on, 1 day off for onshore positions. Shutdown periods (planned maintenance, typically 4-8 weeks) require 24/7 operations with maximum overtime. Safety is paramount with strict permit-to-work systems, lockout/tagout procedures, hot work permits, and confined space protocols. H2S (hydrogen sulfide) awareness is critical due to sour gas presence.
Aramco Approval Process
Aramco approval (also called Aramco “Saudization” approval) is required for many specialized roles. The process involves: trade tests at Aramco-approved facilities, document verification, medical clearance, security background check, and final approval letter. Approved workers can work across all Aramco facilities. The approval is valid for 6 months to 2 years and must be periodically renewed.
Visa and Iqama Process
Oil and gas contractors expedite visa processing due to project demands. After selection (always including rigorous trade tests for skilled trades), you receive a work visa. Upon arrival, you undergo additional Aramco site orientation, safety training (typically 1-2 weeks), drug testing, and Iqama processing. Total onboarding takes 3-6 weeks before deployment to actual work.
Eligibility Requirements
Engineering positions require relevant degrees with 3 to 10 years of oil and gas experience. Skilled trade workers need trade certifications and Aramco approvals (preferred). All workers must pass strict medical exams, drug screening, and safety orientation. H2S awareness training is mandatory. Physical fitness and ability to work in harsh desert conditions are essential. Age limit is typically 21 to 55 (older for senior specialists).
Document Checklist
Required documents include attested educational certificates, professional certifications (NEBOSH, IOSH, OPITO, etc.), Aramco approval certificate (if available), detailed work experience letters with project names and types, character certificate, medical fitness certificate, GAMCA medical, police clearance, valid passport (18+ months), recent photographs, and trade test certificates.

Tips for Oil Field Job Seekers
Get safety certifications: NEBOSH (UK-based safety qualification, gold standard), IOSH, OSHA 30, BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), H2S awareness. Build a portfolio of major project experience. Develop strong English communication. Get Aramco approval through proper testing facilities. Network through LinkedIn and oil and gas professional groups.
Fraud Prevention
Oil and gas jobs are heavily targeted by fraud due to high salaries. Genuine recruitment always includes trade tests for skilled positions. Real recruitment for top oil and gas positions charges SAR 20,000-40,000 maximum for the entire process.
