Thinking about a Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) job with India Post? You are in the right place. This 2026 guide covers the MTS role from start to finish — eligibility, realistic pay, documents, how to apply and how selection works — written clearly for first-time applicants, with an important section on avoiding job scams.
About the Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) Role in India Post
India Post, run by the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications, operates lakhs of post offices across cities, towns and villages. The Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) role plays an important part in keeping this network running — whether that means running a branch post office, delivering mail, handling counters, or supporting day-to-day operations. Recruitment for the MTS post happens regularly, often circle-wise (state-wise), which means first-time applicants can usually find vacancies in their own state or nearby divisions. It is a respected job with government pay, allowances and long-term stability, and for many people it is one of the most reliable careers available locally.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility
- Education: The Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) role usually requires 10th pass. This makes it well suited to first-time applicants.
- Age: Generally 18 to 40 years, with age relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules.
- Basic skills: Basic computer knowledge is expected for most India Post roles, along with the ability to read and write in the required language.
- Documents: Valid ID and address proof, education certificates and photographs.
Always confirm the exact eligibility, age limits and relaxations in the official notification, because criteria differ by role, circle and year.
Salary & Benefits (Approximate)
MTS roles follow Pay Level 1, commonly around ₹18,000–₹32,000 per month in-hand including allowances, depending on the city and current rules. These figures are indicative only — actual pay depends on the post, pay level, city (HRA) and current government rules, so always confirm the exact salary in the official notification and appointment letter.
Beyond the basic pay, India Post roles typically come with government allowances, and regular (departmental) posts include benefits such as leave, medical facilities and retirement benefits as per the applicable rules. Job security and steady increments are a big reason these roles are so popular.

- Register and fill the form. Enter your details accurately and upload your documents and photograph as required.
- Pay the fee (if any) only through the official portal.
- Submit and save a copy. Keep your registration number and a printout or screenshot for reference.
- Track the result. Watch the official website for the merit list, exam dates or further instructions.
Apply well before the deadline and double-check every detail, as small mistakes can lead to rejection.
Selection Process
For the Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) role, a merit list or a basic test followed by document verification. Whatever the process, make sure the details you enter exactly match your certificates, because final selection always includes document verification. For first-time applicants, the most important things are to apply honestly, keep your documents ready, and follow the official website for updates on merit lists, exam dates and verification.
Documents You’ll Usually Need
- 10th (and 12th, if required) mark sheets and certificates.
- Aadhaar card or other government photo ID and address proof.
- Basic computer certificate (where required).
- Caste/category or disability certificate if claiming any relaxation.
- Recent passport-size photograph and signature.
Keep clear scanned copies ready in one folder so you can apply quickly when a notification opens.
Career Growth & Why It’s a Good Job
The Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) role can be the start of a long, secure career. With experience and departmental exams or promotions, staff can move into higher grades over time. Beyond salary, government roles bring job security, allowances and (for regular posts) retirement benefits as per rules. For first-time applicants — especially in smaller towns and villages — an India Post job is one of the most respected and dependable long-term careers available.
Preparation & Practical Tips
- Apply early — do not wait for the last date when portals are slow.
- Keep your documents, computer certificate and photograph ready in advance.
- Enter your marks and details exactly as printed on your certificates.
- Follow only the official India Post / SSC channels for updates.
- If a written or computer-based test is involved, practise basic maths, reasoning, general awareness and the relevant language.
Beware of Job Scams (Important)
Fake India Post recruitment offers are common. Protect yourself:
- Never pay for a job. India Post does not ask for money for a guaranteed appointment. Any agent demanding a large payment for a “confirmed” post office job is a fraud.
- Use only official websites. Apply through the official India Post / GDS portal or SSC — not through forwarded links.
- Beware fake appointment letters. Scammers imitate government letterheads; verify everything on the official site.
- Never share OTPs or bank passwords. No genuine recruiter needs your OTP, ATM PIN or full bank credentials.
- Doubt “too good to be true” offers. A job with no process, or guaranteed selection for a fee, is a scam.
If something feels wrong, pause and verify through official channels before sharing money or documents.

Final Thoughts
The Postal Multi Tasking Staff (MTS) role with India Post offers a stable, respected and accessible government career in 2026, well suited to first-time applicants. Focus on meeting the eligibility, keeping honest and well-organised documents, applying only through official channels, and staying alert to scams. With consistent effort and attention to official notifications, you can turn this into a secure long-term career close to home.
After Selection: Joining and Training
Once you clear the process and document verification, you will receive joining instructions for your allotted post office or division. New staff are usually given basic orientation and on-the-job training covering their duties, the systems used, and the standards India Post expects. Treat this period as an opportunity to learn the work thoroughly and build a clean record from day one. A reliable, honest and punctual start not only makes the job easier but also supports your chances of future promotions and departmental exams.
Understanding India Post Circles and Divisions
India Post is organised into postal circles that broadly match the states, and each circle is further divided into divisions and sub-divisions. This structure matters when you apply, because vacancies are often released for a specific circle or division rather than the whole country at once. Knowing your circle helps you apply for the right vacancy, choose a preferred posting location closer to home, and understand which office will handle your document verification. Before applying, it is worth checking which circle covers your district and whether the current notification includes vacancies in your area.
