Delivery Driver Jobs in Portugal 2026: License, Salary and Work Visa Guide

Portugal has quietly become one of the most practical entry points into the European job market for foreigners with a driving license and a willingness to work. In 2026, the demand for delivery drivers across the country continues to outpace local supply, from busy Lisbon streets to regional freight corridors in the north. Whether you are considering courier roles, last-mile parcel delivery, or long-haul trucking, there are real openings waiting. This guide walks through the license categories you need, what salaries look like today, how the Portugal employment visa process works for non-EU nationals, and where to find employers offering jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship.

Why Portugal Needs Delivery Drivers in 2026

E-commerce growth across Southern Europe has pushed demand for logistics workers to record levels. Portugal’s online retail market expanded by over 18 percent in 2025, and that growth has not slowed. Local carriers, international courier firms, and food delivery platforms cannot fill their rosters with domestic candidates alone. This shortage is why employers are actively looking at expat jobs Portugal candidates and non-EU applicants with valid licenses and professional driving experience. For anyone wanting to work in Portugal 2026, the transport sector offers a structured entry point with stable income and a genuine pathway to long-term residency.

Types of Delivery Driver Roles You Can Apply For

Not every driving job looks the same. The sector covers several distinct roles, each with different requirements and earning potential.

Food and Parcel Delivery

Platforms like Glovo, Uber Eats, and Chronopost operate extensively across Lisbon, Porto, and Braga. These positions typically require a category AM or A1 license for scooter use, or a category B license for car-based delivery. Hours can be flexible, making these roles popular among new arrivals who are still settling in.

Van and Light Vehicle Drivers

Retail logistics and courier companies including CTT, DHL, and FedEx recruit van drivers for last-mile delivery on fixed routes. A category B driving license is the baseline requirement. These employers sometimes support the Portugal work visa process for drivers relocating from outside the EU, especially when filling high-turnover positions.

Heavy Goods and Freight Drivers

Long-distance freight is where the greatest shortages exist. Truck driving roles require a category C or C+E license and a valid CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) card. The shortage of qualified HGV drivers across Europe means this skill class attracts the most competitive salaries and the most willingness from employers to sponsor Portugal work visa jobs.

License Requirements for Non-EU Drivers

Portugal follows EU driving license standards, so any EU-issued license works without conversion. For non-EU nationals, the rules depend on your country of origin.

Drivers from Brazil benefit from a bilateral agreement that allows license conversion without a full practical exam, though administrative steps and official translations are still required. For drivers from countries without a formal agreement – including India, the Philippines, and most of South Asia – the full Portuguese driving test process applies, covering both theory and practical components.

Professional drivers in any category must also hold a valid CPC card, regardless of where their original training took place. The Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) manages all license validation and conversion procedures. Starting this process early is essential, as timelines can stretch to several months.

Average Salaries for Delivery Drivers in Portugal

Earnings vary by role, contract type, and location. The figures below reflect 2026 market rates.

Food Delivery and Gig Roles

Couriers working through app platforms typically earn between 900 and 1,200 euros per month, depending on hours worked. Income is variable and benefits are limited in gig arrangements.

Van and Light Vehicle Drivers

Full-time employed positions with logistics companies pay between 1,100 and 1,500 euros per month. Many contracts include fuel cards, meal allowances, and overtime pay that pushes take-home income higher.

HGV and Freight Drivers

This is the highest-paid tier in the sector. Experienced truck drivers can earn between 1,500 and 2,100 euros per month. Drivers holding an ADR certificate for hazardous goods transport sit at the top of that range. Portugal’s national minimum wage stands at 870 euros per month in 2026, and nearly all full-time driving positions exceed that floor.

How the Portugal Employment Visa Works for Delivery Drivers

For foreigners outside the EU – particularly those looking into Portugal jobs for Indians or applicants from Africa and Asia – the visa pathway requires planning.

Employment Visa Route

The Portugal employment visa requires a signed job offer from a Portuguese employer. The employer must demonstrate that the vacancy could not be filled by a local or EU candidate. Once the visa is granted at the Portuguese consulate in your home country, you enter Portugal and begin work. A residence permit application follows after arrival.

Regularization Through Labor Contracts

Foreign nationals already present in Portugal under a valid status may regularize their situation through labor contracts registered with the Social Security system. This route has been used frequently by workers in logistics and transport who initially entered on other grounds.

Confirming visa support with your employer before applying saves time and avoids disappointment. Established logistics companies with experience hiring internationally are your best starting point for jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship.

Where to Find Delivery Driver Jobs in Portugal

IEFP, Portugal’s public employment service, lists open positions across all regions and is a reliable starting point. LinkedIn Portugal, Indeed, and Glassdoor carry regular listings from both domestic carriers and international logistics brands. Specialized recruitment agencies – including Randstad Portugal and Adecco – often fill roles before they appear on public boards.

For Lisbon jobs for foreigners specifically, expat communities on Facebook and forums like Internations can surface leads quickly. Targeting employers directly by checking career pages of CTT, DHL, Correos Express, and GLS Portugal is also effective.

Tips for a Successful Application

Prepare your CV in Portuguese format, which typically includes a photo and personal details at the top. Have your driving license officially translated and authenticated before submitting applications. If your license requires conversion, begin the IMT process as early as possible.

Basic conversational Portuguese is not mandatory at most international employers, but it helps significantly when dealing with route management, customers, and day-to-day logistics. Demonstrating some language effort in your cover letter signals genuine commitment to working long-term in Portugal.
