Airport Jobs in Lisbon and Porto Are Open to Foreign Workers in 2026
Portugal’s aviation sector is one of the fastest-growing in Southern Europe, and that growth is creating real, accessible opportunities for people looking for jobs in Portugal for foreigners. Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon and Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport in Porto together handle tens of millions of passengers each year. To keep operations running smoothly, both airports rely on a large and diverse workforce that goes far beyond pilots and cabin crew.
If you are looking for work in Portugal 2026 and want to start without a university degree or specialist certification, airport ground-side roles offer a realistic entry point. Ground handling, aircraft cleaning, baggage sorting, ramp operations, and fuelling are all positions that hire regularly and, in many cases, are open to candidates who need Portugal work visa jobs with full sponsorship. This article covers everything you need to know: what the jobs involve, what they pay, which companies are hiring, and how to apply from abroad.
What Airport Ground-Side Jobs Actually Involve
Airport operations depend on dozens of roles that most travellers never see. Understanding the work before you apply helps you target the right openings and write stronger applications.
Ground Handling Agent
Ground handling agents coordinate the turnaround of aircraft between flights. Tasks include guiding aircraft to the gate, loading and unloading baggage, connecting ground power units, and communicating with cockpit crews. The role is physical, time-pressured, and requires good attention to safety protocol. Employers typically train new hires on site, which makes this one of the more accessible Lisbon jobs for foreigners who arrive without prior aviation experience.
Baggage Handler
Baggage handlers work on the ramp and in the baggage halls. They sort luggage by flight, load it onto belt loaders and aircraft holds, and retrieve it for passengers at arrivals carousels. The work involves heavy lifting and shift patterns that cover early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Most positions pay an additional shift supplement on top of base salary.

Aircraft and Cabin Cleaner
Aircraft turnaround cleaning is a high-demand role because planes must be cleaned and restocked between every flight. Teams work to strict time limits, moving through cabins to collect rubbish, replace headrest covers, clean toilets, and restock galleys. This role is frequently listed under expat jobs Portugal as it requires minimal language ability and offers quick onboarding.
Passenger Services Agent
Some airport employers group passenger-facing duties under their ground handling contracts. These agents assist at check-in desks, help passengers with reduced mobility, and manage boarding gates. A working level of English is generally required, and Portuguese language skills improve your prospects significantly.
Key Employers Hiring at Lisbon and Porto Airports
Several large ground handling and aviation services companies operate across both airports. Each has its own hiring cycles, and most list open roles on their Portuguese career pages as well as on national job boards.
Groundforce Portugal is one of the largest ground handling providers at Humberto Delgado Airport. The company handles baggage, ramp operations, and passenger services for dozens of airlines. It recruits in regular cohorts and has historically offered jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship to workers from outside the European Union when demand outpaces the local labour supply.
Menzies Aviation and Swissport both operate at Portuguese airports as part of their wider European networks. These multinationals often have English-language HR processes, which can make the application experience more accessible for people approaching from abroad.
SATS Portugal and various subcontracted cleaning firms handle in-flight catering and cabin preparation. These companies tend to hire year-round rather than seasonally.
Salaries for Airport Jobs in Portugal
Pay in the Portuguese aviation ground sector is above the national minimum wage in most cases, particularly when shift supplements and productivity bonuses are included. The table below reflects approximate monthly gross figures for 2026 based on standard full-time contracts.
| Role | Monthly Gross (EUR) | Shift Supplement | Notes |
| Baggage Handler | 850 to 1,050 | 15 to 25 percent | Higher with night shifts |
| Ground Handling Agent | 900 to 1,150 | 15 to 20 percent | Ramp certification adds pay |
| Aircraft Cleaner | 820 to 980 | 10 to 20 percent | Often includes transport |
| Cabin Cleaning Supervisor | 1,050 to 1,300 | 10 to 15 percent | Requires prior team lead experience |
| Passenger Services Agent | 950 to 1,200 | Variable | English required |
Portugal’s national minimum wage in 2026 stands at 870 EUR per month, and most airport roles start at or above this level. Workers covered by collective bargaining agreements in the aviation sector typically receive better pay and more robust holiday entitlements.
Visa and Work Permit Requirements for Non-EU Candidates
For people pursuing Portugal employment visa routes, the airport sector provides a practical opportunity because many roles appear on Portugal’s shortage occupation list, which simplifies the visa application process. EU and EEA citizens do not need a work permit and can apply directly through any channel.
Non-EU citizens, including those searching for Portugal jobs for Indians and workers from Brazil, Cape Verde, Ukraine, and other countries, typically follow one of two routes. The first is the job seeker visa, which allows you to enter Portugal and search for work for up to 120 days. The second is the employment visa, where your employer initiates sponsorship before you travel.
For airport roles specifically, employer sponsorship is the more reliable route. Groundforce and Swissport have HR teams experienced in handling Portugal work visa jobs for foreign candidates. When a company lists a role as open to non-EU applicants, they are signalling willingness to support the immigration process, though you should always confirm this in writing during the interview stage.
Applicants need a clean criminal record, a valid passport, and in some cases a medical certificate confirming fitness for physical work. Ramp roles also require an airside security pass, which employers obtain on your behalf once you are hired.
How to Apply for Airport Jobs From Abroad
Applying for expat jobs Portugal in the aviation sector from outside the country follows a straightforward process if you approach it systematically.
Start by visiting the careers pages of Groundforce Portugal, Menzies Aviation, and Swissport directly. Filter for roles at Lisbon and Porto. Job boards including Indeed Portugal, LinkedIn, and the national employment network IEFP also list airport vacancies and allow you to set email alerts for new postings.
Tailor your CV to highlight any physical work experience, shift work history, or roles involving safety awareness. If you have operated machinery, worked in logistics, or held a forklift licence, include these details. Portuguese employers appreciate a short cover letter even for manual roles, and writing one in both English and basic Portuguese demonstrates genuine interest.
During the interview process, which is often conducted by video call for overseas candidates, be prepared to confirm your visa status, confirm your availability to start, and show that you understand the shift patterns involved. Some employers run assessment days where multiple candidates complete a safety awareness test and a brief physical assessment before being offered a contract.
Once an offer is made, your employer will guide you through the Portugal employment visa application. The process involves submitting documents to the Portuguese consulate in your home country, including your employment contract, proof of accommodation, and financial means. Processing times currently range from four to ten weeks depending on the consulate.
Tips for Securing an Airport Role as a Foreign Worker
These practical points will help you stand out from other candidates and avoid common mistakes.
Learn basic Portuguese before you arrive. Even a few hundred words of conversational Portuguese will help you on shift and signal to your employer that you are committed to integrating into the workplace. Many free resources are available online.
Get your documents in order before applying. Having a notarised translation of your criminal record certificate, educational documents, and any previous employment references ready to go speeds up the process once you receive an offer.
Be flexible about airports and roles. Applying to both Lisbon and Porto increases your chances. If you are open to cabin cleaning as well as ramp work, say so clearly in your application. Employers value candidates who can be placed in more than one area.
Look for accommodation before your start date. Porto in particular has a competitive rental market. Budget for a shared apartment or a room in a residential hostel for your first month while you locate permanent housing.
Join Portuguese expat communities online. Forums and Facebook groups for expats in Lisbon and Porto often share current job leads, employer reviews, and practical immigration advice that supplements official channels.
Living and Working in Lisbon and Porto as an Expat
Both cities offer a quality of life that continues to attract workers from across the world. Lisbon has an established international community, good public transport, and a cost of living that, while rising, remains lower than London, Amsterdam, or Paris for comparable roles. Porto is smaller, with a strong sense of neighbourhood character and slightly lower rents on average.
For workers arriving on a Portugal employment visa, the first year typically involves adapting to Portuguese bureaucracy, including registering with the local council, obtaining a tax number, and registering with the national health service. Your employer’s HR team should assist with the initial steps, and the national employment agency IEFP provides support services for foreign workers settling into the labour market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply for airport jobs in Portugal without speaking Portuguese?
For ramp and cleaning roles, limited Portuguese is sometimes acceptable at entry level, particularly at companies with international management. However, any customer-facing role requires at least basic communication in Portuguese or English. Learning Portuguese quickly after arrival will protect your long-term prospects.
Do airport employers in Portugal offer visa sponsorship for non-EU workers?
Some do. Groundforce Portugal, Swissport, and Menzies Aviation have all sponsored work visas for non-EU candidates in the past when suitable local candidates were unavailable. You must confirm sponsorship willingness before accepting any offer.
What is the typical working schedule for a baggage handler in Portugal?
Airport operations run around the clock, so most baggage handling roles involve rotating shifts covering mornings, afternoons, and nights across a seven-day week. Contracts typically guarantee a set number of hours per month with a rolling schedule published weekly.
Is accommodation provided for airport workers in Lisbon or Porto?
Accommodation is generally not included. A small number of larger employers provide a temporary housing subsidy or connections to shared housing schemes for newly arrived workers, but you should not rely on this and should budget for your first month of rent independently.
How long does the Portugal employment visa take to process for airport jobs?
Processing times at Portuguese consulates vary by country of application but currently average six to ten weeks. Applying as soon as you receive your employment contract and keeping all documents complete and properly certified will minimise delays.
Conclusion
Airport jobs in Lisbon and Porto represent one of the more accessible routes into the Portuguese labour market for people looking for jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship. Ground handling, baggage, and cleaning roles hire year-round, pay above the national minimum wage, and in many cases can be secured from abroad through direct employer sponsorship.
Whether you are looking for Lisbon jobs for foreigners as a recent graduate, a career changer, or a worker with logistics experience from another country, the aviation sector offers stable employment with clear paths into supervisory roles over time. The key is to apply directly to major ground handling companies, confirm visa sponsorship early in the process, and invest in even basic Portuguese language skills before you arrive.
