Hotel & Office Cleaning Jobs in Portugal: Pay, Contracts & Legal Requirements
Portugal has quietly become one of the most accessible destinations in Europe for foreigners looking for steady, entry-level employment. Hotel housekeeping and office cleaning jobs in Portugal are among the most consistently available roles for people with no formal qualifications, and many of these positions come with legal work contracts, employer support, and in some cases, jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship for candidates coming from outside the European Union.
Whether you are exploring expat jobs in Portugal, researching Portugal jobs for Indians, or simply want to understand how to work in Portugal 2026 as a cleaning professional, this guide covers everything you need to know about salaries, contracts, rights, and how to apply.
Why Hotel and Office Cleaning Jobs Are in High Demand in Portugal
Portugal welcomed over 30 million tourists in 2024, and the hospitality sector continues to expand. Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and Madeira all have thriving hotel industries that require large, reliable housekeeping teams year-round.
At the same time, Lisbon has seen rapid growth in corporate offices, co-working spaces, and commercial buildings. This creates consistent demand for office cleaning professionals throughout the country. For foreigners looking at Lisbon jobs for foreigners, both sectors offer realistic entry points into the Portuguese job market without requiring advanced language skills or a university degree.
The shortage of local workers in these roles has pushed many employers to recruit internationally, which is why the topic of Portugal work visa jobs and visa sponsorship has become increasingly relevant for candidates from countries like India, Brazil, Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

Types of Cleaning Jobs Available in Portugal
Hotel Room Attendant and Housekeeping Roles
Room attendants are responsible for cleaning and preparing guest rooms, restocking amenities, changing linens, and reporting maintenance issues. These roles are common in three-star to five-star hotels across Lisbon, Porto, Faro, and coastal resort areas.
Senior housekeeping roles such as floor supervisor or housekeeping coordinator pay more and are available to candidates who have prior experience and some basic Portuguese or English.
Office and Commercial Cleaning Roles
Office cleaners work in corporate buildings, schools, hospitals, shopping centres, and public facilities. Schedules are often split – early morning before offices open, or evening shifts after business hours. Some contracts offer full-time hours by combining multiple client sites.
These roles are managed by facility management companies such as ISS Portugal, Sodexo Portugal, and Grupo Limpeza Total, which employ thousands of cleaners across the country under collective bargaining agreements.
Average Salaries and Pay Rates for Cleaning Jobs in Portugal
Understanding what you will earn is essential before pursuing jobs in Portugal for foreigners. Portugal raised its national minimum wage in 2025 and the trajectory continues upward into 2026.

Portugal uses a 14-month salary system. In addition to your 12 monthly payments, workers are entitled to a holiday subsidy (equal to one month’s salary) and a Christmas subsidy (another month’s salary). This effectively increases annual earnings beyond the base monthly rate.
Work Contracts and Employment Rights in Portugal
Portugal has strong worker protections under its Labour Code (Codigo do Trabalho). As a foreign worker, the same rights apply to you as to Portuguese nationals.
Key points to understand:
- All employment must be covered by a written work contract. Refuse any offer that involves cash-in-hand payment with no documentation.
- The standard working week is 40 hours. Overtime must be paid at a premium – typically 25 percent for the first hour and 37.5 percent for subsequent hours.
- Workers are entitled to 22 days of paid annual leave per year.
- After the probationary period (typically 90 days for most contracts), dismissal requires just cause or compensation.
- Social security contributions (Seguranca Social) are mandatory. Your employer pays 23.75 percent and you contribute 11 percent from your salary. These contributions give you access to healthcare, unemployment benefits, and pension rights.
Always ensure your employer registers you with Seguranca Social. This is a legal obligation and a key protection for expat jobs in Portugal.
Legal Requirements for Foreigners Working in Portugal
To legally work in Portugal, foreigners from outside the EU need to obtain a Portuguese employment visa before travelling to Portugal. This visa is issued by the Portuguese consulate or embassy in your home country.
To be eligible, you typically need:
- A signed job offer or employment contract from a Portuguese employer
- Proof that the employer is registered and tax-compliant in Portugal
- A valid passport
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal
- A clean criminal record certificate
- Proof of health insurance (in some cases)
Once you arrive, you will need to register with the local parish council (Junta de Freguesia) and apply for a residence permit through the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA, formerly SEF).
EU, EEA, and Swiss nationals do not need a visa and can begin working immediately, though they must register as residents within 90 days of arrival.
Portugal Work Visa and Visa Sponsorship for Cleaning Jobs
The Portugal employment visa is the standard pathway for most non-EU workers. However, many candidates also qualify under the Manifestacao de Interesse (Expression of Interest) route, which allows certain non-EU nationals already in Portugal on short-term visas to apply for regularisation if they have a job offer and social security registration.
For Portugal jobs for Indians and candidates from other countries with bilateral labour agreements, the process is generally straightforward as long as the employer is willing to sponsor the visa application. Sponsorship here means the employer provides the employment contract and supporting documents – they do not always pay visa fees, but they do take legal responsibility for the job offer.
When searching for jobs in Portugal with visa sponsorship, look specifically for large hotel chains and facility management companies. These organisations are more familiar with the immigration process and more likely to support a Portugal employment visa application than smaller employers.
How to Apply for Cleaning Jobs in Portugal
Finding and applying for cleaning jobs as a foreigner in Portugal requires a combination of online job boards, direct applications, and recruitment agencies.
Practical steps to follow:
1. Search major Portuguese job portals such as Indeed Portugal, Net-Empregos, and Emprego.pt. Use keywords like “limpeza” (cleaning), “empregada de andares” (room attendant), or “auxiliar de limpeza” (cleaning assistant).
2. Apply directly to large hotel chains including Marriott Portugal, Hilton Lisbon, AccorHotels Portugal, and NH Hotels. Their career pages list vacancies and accept applications from abroad.
3. Contact facility management companies such as ISS Portugal, Sodexo Portugal, and Eurest Portugal. These companies regularly hire cleaners for office and commercial contracts across multiple cities.
4. Use recruitment agencies that specialise in hospitality and cleaning roles, including Randstad Portugal and Adecco Portugal. Some agencies work specifically with foreign candidates and can assist with Portugal work visa jobs.
5. Prepare a simple CV in Portuguese or English. Include your cleaning experience, any relevant certifications, and your availability. A professional photo is common on Portuguese CVs.
6. If you are already in Portugal on a tourist visa, visit local Centros de Emprego (employment centres) operated by IEFP. They list local vacancies and can connect you with employers.
Tips for Expats and Foreign Workers Seeking Cleaning Jobs
Getting hired in a competitive market requires preparation. These tips specifically address the challenges faced by people pursuing expat jobs in Portugal or planning to work in Portugal 2026 for the first time.
Learn basic Portuguese before you arrive. Even a few phrases make a strong impression on Portuguese employers. Free apps and online courses can get you to a basic conversational level within a few months.
Network within your community. Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali, and Filipino communities in Lisbon and Porto often share job leads through WhatsApp groups and community associations. Portugal jobs for Indians are often found through word of mouth within these networks.
Keep your documents organised. Carry copies of your passport, NIF (Portuguese tax number), social security card, and contract at all times. Your NIF is required to open a bank account, sign a contract, and access most services.
Understand your rights before you sign. If an employer offers a contract in Portuguese only and you do not understand it, ask for a translated version or consult a worker rights organisation such as CITE (Commission for Equality in Labour).
Be patient with the residency process. Portugal’s immigration backlog means residence permits can take several months to process. Keep records of all applications and appointments, and continue working legally on your employment visa in the meantime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can foreigners without EU citizenship get cleaning jobs in Portugal?
Yes. Non-EU nationals can legally work in Portugal by obtaining a Portugal employment visa before arrival. The employer must provide a signed job offer or contract to support the visa application. Many large hotels and facility management companies in Portugal have experience hiring non-EU workers and can guide you through the process.
What is the minimum wage for cleaning workers in Portugal in 2026?
The national minimum wage in Portugal was raised to 1,020 EUR per month in 2025, with further increases expected in 2026. Cleaning workers covered by collective agreements in the hotel or facility management sectors may receive slightly higher base rates depending on the agreement in force.
Do cleaning jobs in Portugal come with accommodation?
Some hotel resort properties, particularly in the Algarve and on Madeira island, offer staff accommodation as part of the employment package. This is less common in urban areas like Lisbon and Porto, where workers are expected to find their own housing. Always clarify accommodation arrangements before accepting any offer.
Is Portuguese language required for cleaning jobs in Portugal?
Basic Portuguese is helpful but not always required for entry-level cleaning roles. In tourist-heavy areas and international hotels, employers are accustomed to multilingual teams. However, learning Portuguese improves your long-term employment prospects and helps with day-to-day life in Portugal.
How long does it take to get a Portugal work visa for a cleaning job?
Processing times vary depending on the Portuguese consulate in your home country, but employment visas typically take four to eight weeks after submission of a complete application. It is advisable to start the process as early as possible once you have a confirmed job offer.
