The Postman & Mail Guard role is a popular entry point into a secure India Post career. Because hiring happens circle-wise across the country, candidates in every state in states like Gujarat and Assam regularly get opportunities close to home. This 2026 guide explains eligibility, salary, the step-by-step application process and selection for the Postman post.
About the Postman & Mail Guard Role in India Post
India Post, run by the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications, operates lakhs of post offices across cities, towns and villages. The Postman & Mail Guard role plays an important part in keeping this network running — whether that means running a branch post office, delivering mail, handling counters, or supporting day-to-day operations. Recruitment for the Postman post happens regularly, often circle-wise (state-wise), which means candidates in every state can usually find vacancies in their own state or nearby divisions. It is a respected job with government pay, allowances and long-term stability, and for many people it is one of the most reliable careers available locally.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility
- Education: The Postman & Mail Guard role usually requires 10th or 12th pass. This makes it well suited to candidates in every state.
- Age: Generally 18 to 40 years, with age relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules.
- Basic skills: Basic computer knowledge is expected for most India Post roles, along with the ability to read and write in the required language.
- Documents: Valid ID and address proof, education certificates and photographs.
Always confirm the exact eligibility, age limits and relaxations in the official notification, because criteria differ by role, circle and year.
Salary & Benefits (Approximate)
Postman and Mail Guard roles follow Pay Level 3, commonly around ₹21,000–₹40,000 per month in-hand including allowances, depending on the city and current rules. These figures are indicative only — actual pay depends on the post, pay level, city (HRA) and current government rules, so always confirm the exact salary in the official notification and appointment letter.
Beyond the basic pay, India Post roles typically come with government allowances, and regular (departmental) posts include benefits such as leave, medical facilities and retirement benefits as per the applicable rules. Job security and steady increments are a big reason these roles are so popular.

Career Growth & Why It’s a Good Job
The Postman & Mail Guard role can be the start of a long, secure career. With experience and departmental exams or promotions, staff can move into higher grades over time. Beyond salary, government roles bring job security, allowances and (for regular posts) retirement benefits as per rules. For candidates in every state — especially in smaller towns and villages — an India Post job is one of the most respected and dependable long-term careers available.
Preparation & Practical Tips
- Apply early — do not wait for the last date when portals are slow.
- Keep your documents, computer certificate and photograph ready in advance.
- Enter your marks and details exactly as printed on your certificates.
- Follow only the official India Post / SSC channels for updates.
- If a written or computer-based test is involved, practise basic maths, reasoning, general awareness and the relevant language.
Beware of Job Scams (Important)
Fake India Post recruitment offers are common. Protect yourself:
- Never pay for a job. India Post does not ask for money for a guaranteed appointment. Any agent demanding a large payment for a “confirmed” post office job is a fraud.
- Use only official websites. Apply through the official India Post / GDS portal or SSC — not through forwarded links.
- Beware fake appointment letters. Scammers imitate government letterheads; verify everything on the official site.
- Never share OTPs or bank passwords. No genuine recruiter needs your OTP, ATM PIN or full bank credentials.
- Doubt “too good to be true” offers. A job with no process, or guaranteed selection for a fee, is a scam.
If something feels wrong, pause and verify through official channels before sharing money or documents.
